Cancer Specific Diet and Supplement Plans

The following information is based on the work of William Donald Kelley, who first proposed that cancer occurs in a state of autonomic imbalance and that each of the two extremes, whether it is a sympathetic dominant individual or the parasympathetic dominant individual, would be predisposed to contracting certain malignancies based upon that imbalance.

Dr William Donald Kelley

Dr William Donald Kelley

The nerves of the autonomic nervous system are composed of two branches, the parasympathetic and the sympathetic, and each will regulate a different set of systems and organs within the body. The two systems also act as a control mechanism for the other, but when one half of the nervous system exerts too much dominance over the other, some of your organs begin to function too quickly while others will function too slowly, and this is what creates the imbalance and disease within the body.

The sympathetic system- controls the release of hormones from the thyroid, adrenals and pituitary gland, and it also controls the fight-or-flight response that directs the blood flow away from the organs to the muscles and brain as the body readies itself to fight off danger. It is a catabolic response, meaning that it is associated with the breaking down of the tissues and the burning up of the nutrients and hormones. When this is the dominant response of the body, the acid levels of the body increase and the nutritional stores are eventually used up. Some symptoms that sympathetic dominant individuals may suffer from include decreased saliva production along with weak stomach acids which make for poor digestion and failure to obtain all of the available nutrients from foods. This person may also have constipation, nervousness, anxiety, impatience, emotional outbursts, increased heart rate, night sweats, muscle tension, adrenal fatigue, increased rates of infection, and increased inflammation. The sympathetic system can also be overly stimulated by the consumption of caffeine, sugar, and from certain medications.

The parasympathetic system – controls the digestion of food, the assimilation of nutrients throughout the body, as well as the elimination of waste and it is associated with the general repair and rebuilding processes of the body (anabolic metabolism).  While these may all sound like positives, a parasympathetic dominant individual will also suffer from an unbalanced system. These people have stronger stomach acids and a faster digestion process, and they may also have hyperactive bowels that may include diarrhea.  This person is generally somewhat overweight, has low blood pressure, low blood sugar, and low libido due to lower levels of their sexual hormones. This person may also exhibit an overactive gag reflex, mild incontinence, poor quality sleep, headaches, dizziness,  decreased metabolism, allergies, asthma, and may suffer from feelings of despair and apathy.

Interestingly, these two systems also have control over the acid/alkaline balance as well.  This is because the sympathetic nervous system is predominately acidic, while the parasympathetic nervous system is predominately alkaline. When they are working in tandem they will create a balanced pH cellular environment, but when one system holds dominance over the other they will create either an overly alkaline or an overly acidic environment, and either of these will create a diseased state within the body.

Kelley created individual diet and supplement plans to address each imbalance and found that when individuals began to eat the diet that was right for them, then their rate of digestion would become normalized and the two systems would begin to work in balance once again. When digestion was improved for the sympathetic dominant individuals, the acidic waste levels would drop and this would create pH balance in the body. Additionally, when the parasympathetic individuals ate an appropriate diet for their metabolism, this would normalize the endocrine glands and work to balance hormonal function.

Kelley devised a self-test to see if a person was sympathetic dominant, parasympathetic dominant, or had a balanced metabolism by using niacin:  this can be performed by swallowing 50 mgs of Niacin on an empty stomach (note: this is not niacinamide, or slow release, or the no-flush kind of niacin).  This test is effective because the niacin will be broken down quickly by the strong stomach acids of the parasympathetic individuals to produce the flushing and redness, while those with a sympathetic dominant system and slower digestion issues will not have this same result. So, if within a half an hour, your cheeks are red and your skin feels hot and itchy, then you fall into the parasympathetic dominant category and have more of a meat-eaters metabolism. If you feel slightly warmer and have a better color in your face, then you have a balanced metabolism and can eat a varied diet generally without issues. If you don’t feel anything from this test, then you may have a slow digestive process of a sympathetic dominant person with more of a grain-eater/vegetarian metabolism.

The flushing feeling can feel a little uncomfortable but it will go away within 10 minutes to an hour without lasting effects, just continue drinking fluids to clear it from your system.

Sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance

Dr Nicholas Gonzalez

According to Kelley’s research and that of Dr Nicholas Gonzalez, the development of solid tumors would tend to occur in those with an overly dominant sympathetic system (catabolic, overly acidic environment).  These include solid tumors of the breast, lung, stomach, pancreas, colon, liver, thyroid, uterus, cervix , ovary, prostate, testes, as well as all skin cancers. As discussed above, the sympathetic dominant individuals have less effective stomach acids and therefore they will digest their meals very slowly. They also fail to obtain optimal nutrients from those meals because of their poor digestion capabilities. Because this process is so much slower than their counterparts, they shouldn’t be eating red or fatty meats or other foods that slow down their lagging digestion even further as this makes them feel physically unwell. These people will thrive on lighter foods that their body can easily digest and assimilate. This person should also make sure to chew their food very well as this is an important first step in the digestive process. Since their bodies are overly acidic, they will need a mostly plant-based diet that consists of unlimited amounts of raw and lightly cooked vegetables, juicing fresh vegetables, fruits, fresh fruit/green smoothies, a variety of nuts and seeds, along with unprocessed whole grains. Their diet can include some organic eggs and wild-caught fish for animal proteins. When this persons digestion normalizes due to the easier diet selections then their two systems will become balanced.

According to their research, the development of immune system cancers would tend to occur in those with an overly dominant parasympathetic system (anabolic, overly alkaline environment). These include myeloma, leukemia, lymphoma, and soft tissue sarcomas. These people tend to have very strong stomach acids and therefore they will digest their foods very quickly. These people don’t do well when they eat a meal that consists of carbohydrates or fruits as they require some amount of animal proteins or other foods that take longer to digest in order to feel satisfied and to function optimally.  Furthermore, since their imbalance is overly-alkaline in general, they should not use an overly-alkaline diet or overly alkaline therapy such as sodium bicarbonate, drink highly alkaline water, or take cesium chloride as these may worsen their situation.  People with these types of cancers tend to do better when they follow a diet that is more balanced and can include a moderate amount of clean animal proteins (this can include grass-fed beef, venison, bison, chicken, turkey, eggs, and wild-caught fish). They can eat moderate amounts of healthy fats, along with fresh or cooked vegetables, fresh vegetable juices, a variety of fruits, fresh fruit smoothies, nuts and seeds, with a limited amounts of whole grains. Although grains are not prominent on this diet, when consumed they should always be whole and unprocessed and preferably organic. When this person is able to slow down their overly fast digestive processes by eating a more appropriate diet, then their two systems will become balanced.

More on the diet plans:

  • Fresh vegetables- are some of the most nutrient dense foods that you can eat. Some cancer-fighters include bok choy, broccoli, spinach, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, collard greens, green beans, kale, leeks, onion, peppers, radish, scallions, mustard greens, Swiss chard, tomatoes, summer squash, mushrooms, sprouts, etc. Vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked depending on how well the person tolerates them.
  • Juicing fresh vegetables is a major part of the diet plans.
  • Raw fruits –have astringent-like qualities that work to specifically target and cleanse the lymphatic fluids which is extremely important when you are healing from cancer.  If you are excluding fruit from your diet, you are missing out on an abundance of antioxidants, flavonoids, and anthocyanins that can prevent an reverse cellular damage and reduce overall inflammation. Some powerful fruits to include are: blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, grapes, cherries, pomegranates, cantaloupe, papaya, pineapple, watermelon, lemons, limes, and oranges.  Fruits are very easily digested, therefore they should be eaten separately, or about 1/2 hour before your main meals, or they can easily be blended into smoothies. Read more about smoothies.
  • The complex carbohydrates for the diets include Ezekiel sprouted breads, brown rice, wild rice, red rice, black rice, oatmeal, millet, triticale, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, lentils, adzuki beans and black beans. How to soak grains and beans.
  • Both diets include eating a variety of raw nuts such as walnuts, cashews, pecans, and almonds, along with nut butters (no peanuts) and a variety of seeds including hemp seeds, chia, sesame, and freshly ground flax seeds. How to soak nuts and seeds.
  • Acceptable fats include unrefined coconut oil, organic butter, ghee, and unrefined lard for cooking purposes, and olive, sesame, and avocado for cold uses.
  • Acceptable meats are preferably free range, whole, and unprocessed and are listed in the individual diet plans below.
  • Organic foods are always preferred over conventional.
  • There are no added sugars on these diet plans as sugar promotes its growth and spread.

Rinse with plain water when finished soaking to prevent the salt from drying your skin.

Thyroid cancer- When one has an iodine deficiency, one of the first problems to occur is the formation of cysts within the thyroid, breasts, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. If the deficiency goes on longer these cysts will become nodular and hard. If it continues on, they will become hyperplastic tissue, which is a cancerous. This healing diet would include lots of raw or lightly cooked vegetables, juicing fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, making fresh fruit/green smoothies, raw nuts and seeds, along with Ezekiel sprouted breads, brown rice, wild rice, red rice, black rice, oatmeal, millet, buckwheat, quinoa, amaranth, triticale, lentils, and black and adzuki beans.   Acceptable animal proteins for this diet can include wild-caught fish one to two times per week and one to two organic eggs can be eaten daily.  No other meats or dairy are allowed on this diet. • Don’t have unnecessary x-rays.  This includes dental as your dentist may not be doing what is best for you but for their own bottom line.  Having yearly dental x-rays may not be in the best interest of the patient.  Request to have a thyroid protector whenever you have an x-ray. Radiation exposure can destroy the thyroid, but often the thyroid protectors are being removed because they are cumbersome to the technicians.  Women should have thermograms instead of mammograms so you aren’t exposing yourself to radiation.
  • This person should take 200 mcg dose of Selenium, which is an important supplement for supporting the thyroid.

Lymphoma, leukemia, myelomas, and soft tissue sarcomas-  These types of cancers are the result of having a damaged immune system, possibly from having a chronic infection  such as viral, bacterial, fungal (candida), etc, heavy metal toxicity (this can be from mercury amalgam fillings or from other sources), pesticide or herbicide exposure, a gluten sensitivity or some other type of food intolerance, or from having an unaddressed dental issue (more commonly an infected root canal, or another type of dental infection).  You will need to clean up the external and internal environments that caused the immune system to overreact in the first place.

*Lymphomas- are cancers of the lymphocytes.  Lymphocytes are the white blood cells that circulate in the lymphatic fluid and determine the specific response of the immune system related to infection, gluten sensitivity or another food intolerance, bacteria, virus, or other toxin as listed above. Also, this is an alkaline-based cancer, meaning that this person should not use an overly-alkaline diet or therapy such as highly alkaline water, sodium bicarbonate, or cesium chloride as these may worsen their situation.

  • People with these types of cancers tend to do better when they follow a diet that is more acidic, so they can include a moderate amount of clean animal proteins (this can include some red meats such as grass-fed beef, venison, and bison, along with organic chicken, wild-caught fish, and organic eggs), moderate amounts of healthy fats, fresh or cooked vegetables, fresh vegetable juices, raw fruits, fresh fruit smoothies, raw nuts and seeds, with limited amounts of whole unprocessed grains.  No dairy is allowed on this diet with the exception of organic butter or ghee being on the list of acceptable fats.
  • People with these types of cancer should supplement with a plant-based calcium, boron, PhosphozymeZinc, Vitamin A,  vitamin E (not synthetic), vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin), and Buffered Form of Vitamin C.
  • This person should supplement with krill oil for essential fatty acids
  • This person could try high dose Intravenous vitamin C, colloidal silver protocol (see below), infrared saunas, drinking essiac tea, ,…. dandelion root tea,…. pau D arco, or some other anti-viral/ anti-bacterial therapy to help the body to deal with the bacterial/viral load
  • This person would also benefit by taking high doses of proteolytic enzymes between their meals, but they should not take digestive enzymes with their meals as the goal is to slow down their quick digestive processes.
  • This person should implement some detoxing therapies.
  • This person would benefit from coffee enemas
  • This person would also benefit from doing remedies and exercises that target and cleanse the lymphatic system such as jumping on a mini trampoline. You can read more about the lymphatic system with this post.
  • This person should soak in an apple cider vinegar bath at least twice each week to help pull toxins from the body. Add one cup of organic apple cider to a warm bath and soak for 20 to 30 minutes. During times of intense toxicity, the apple cider vinegar bath can be done daily.

*Leukemia -is a progressive malignant disease in which the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs produce an increased number of immature or abnormal leukocytes (white blood cells). This overproduction of white blood cells suppresses the production of normal blood cells which leads to anemia and other symptoms.  When someone has leukemia, the body has increased the white blood cell count in order to address a toxicity or an underlying infection issue, but when the immune system is unable to overcome the problem, the immune system gets out of control and creates more and more white blood cells. In order to address this cancer you must figure out what has overstimulated the immune system in the first place and then deal with that issue. Also, this is an alkaline-based cancer, meaning that this person should not use an overly-alkaline diet or therapy such as highly alkaline water, sodium bicarbonate, or cesium chloride as these may worsen their situation.

*Myeloma -is a cancer that develops in the plasma cells of the bone marrow. Plasma cells make the antibodies which are blood proteins that are produced in response to a specific antigen. Antibodies combine chemically with substances that the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood, so finding out what triggered this system to go haywire and addressing that issue would be the first step toward healing. Also, this is an alkaline-based cancer, meaning that this person should not use an overly-alkaline diet or therapy such as highly alkaline water, sodium bicarbonate, or cesium chloride as these may worsen their situation.

*Soft tissue sarcomas- can develop from soft tissues like fat, muscle, nerves, fibrous tissues, blood vessels, or deep skin tissues found in any part of the body including arms, legs, trunk, head and neck area, internal organs, and the area in back of the abdominal cavity . They are related to the immune system cancer, and like those are alkaline-based, meaning that this person should not use an overly alkaline diet or therapy such as sodium bicarbonate, highly alkaline water, or cesium chloride as these may worsen their situation.

  • This person should soak in an apple cider vinegar bath at least twice each week to help pull toxins from the body. Add one cup of organic apple cider to a warm bath and soak for 20 to 30 minutes. During times of intense toxicity, the apple cider vinegar bath can be done daily.

Brain cancers– often occur when the cells of the brain become inflamed due to toxicity, radiation exposure, or even if a person has a damaged gut lining. Have your naturopathic doctor run a toxicity panel so that you can address any issues that arise. This can include viral, bacterial, or heavy metal toxicity.  You should also check for any food intolerances by doing an elimination diet and then take steps to repair and replenish the beneficial bacteria of the gut. The healing diet for this type of cancer is based on the consumption of healthy fats, along with moderate amount of clean animal proteins (preferably the higher fat red meats such as grass-fed beef, venison, bison, along with organic chicken, turkey, eggs, and wild-caught fish). This diet also includes a variety of nuts and seeds, unlimited amounts of non-starchy fresh vegetables, and lots of leafy greens. This diet eliminates most fruits, all starchy vegetables (root vegetables), all grains, and all other carbohydrates.  A ketogenic diet specifically cuts off the fuel that cancerous cells use for growth by the elimination of all sugars and all carbohydrates that the body will convert into glucose.  Normal cells have the ability to use ketones instead of glucose for their energy, but since the mitochondria are damaged in cancer cells, they do not have the ability to use ketones, therefore they will literally starve to death.  The ketogenic diet is is said to be one of the most effective diets for those diagnosed with brain cancer (especially for glioblastomas), although it may not be effective for all situations.
