Tom Arguello heals from testicular cancer with a mostly raw diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes
Tom Arguello was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, which he says is a great city to live in but it consistently ranks as one of the top 10 unhealthiest cities in the U.S. Tom says that his lifestyle was consistent with this indulgent atmosphere and that his diet consisted of lots of high-fat foods, fast foods, and he drank lots of soda. Tom was 5’7″ and weighed 220 lbs.
It was just two weeks before his 37th birthday when he made an appointment to see a urologist about an “abnormality” in one of his testicles. Tom first noticed some changes about 9 months earlier but he admits that he ignored them. As the weeks and months passed he noticed that the testicle in question had increased in size and texture so he spent many hours on the internet trying to self-diagnose what might be going on and and says he kept coming across the same troubling phrase, “testicular cancer.”
He made an appointment for an examination and said he could see the bad news written all over the doctor’s face. He was immediately sent to have an ultrasound, and after his doctors reviewed the results he was scheduled for a CT scan, blood-work, and surgery.
Following the surgery, Tom went back to the doctor to go over the pathology report and was diagnosed with stage IB Seminoma Testicular Cancer. Although it was caught relatively early, the cancer had spread to the epididymis and there was also “Vascular Invasion” as well, meaning there was a greater likelihood that the cancer had already spread to other parts of his body. As he reviewed the survival rates and treatment options, Tom says that he felt uncomfortable with the doctor’s ‘One size fits all’ approach and says that he began feeling more like a statistic than a person.
The following week Tom met with an Oncologist to review his prognosis at which time he was urged to undergo a few rounds of chemotherapy “just so he could sleep good at night.” During this same conversation he was also encouraged to “go eat at McDonald’s after receiving the chemotherapy if that type of food sounded good to him.” Tom says this comment raised a huge red flag for him.
After speaking with his wife Tom decided to go ahead with the chemotherapy. He met with a nurse to go over the procedures at which time she proceeded to tell him about possible complications that might occur with treatments. These included hair loss, loss of appetite, neuropathy (loss of feeling in his fingertips or feet), and that he may end up in the emergency room because the chemotherapy would lower his white blood cell count.
Tom says, “this was a classic case of the side effects being much worse than the problem,” so he decided against having the chemotherapy treatments. He went home and began to research everything he could find relating to alternative cancer treatments. He says that he found a treasure trove of information that included testimonials from people who were being healed from late-stage cancers using nutrition, herbs, and supplements.
Tom formulated a healing diet and lifestyle plan:
- He began eating a large variety of raw fruits and vegetables.
- He eliminated all dairy because it can promote the growth of cancer.
- He reduced his intake of animal proteins and only consumed wild-caught fish and some organic chicken.
- He started his morning with a glass of Kombucha Tea which is a fermented beverage that is rich in probiotics and enzymes that helps support a healthy digestive system. You can find this at most grocery stores or google how to make your own at home.
- An hour later he juiced large amounts of organic vegetables. He typically drank 20-48 ounces of juice throughout the day. The juice was made from lots of green leafy vegetables like kale, Swiss chard, and spinach along with beets, carrots, celery, cucumber, and parsley. He says that he varied the recipe daily. - Tom drank alkaline water throughout the day to raise his pH. You can find alkaline water at most grocery stores these days or look at purchasing a machine to do this. You can find recipes posted below to make alkaline water.
- He took the following supplements: Bio-available Curcumin, Garlic, and Moringa Powder. All of these have cancer fighting properties
- He snacked on raw nuts and seeds: such as walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, etc.
- He took long walks in the fresh air and sunshine so his body could manufacture vitamin D from the sunlight. If you cannot get access to direct sunlight then you can supplement with Vitamin D3.
- He began doing strength training at a local gym.
Tom has had multiple blood tests to confirm that is cancer free. He says. “I don’t like to use the word “remission” because that implies that it could come back. I am here to tell you that cancer CAN be beat naturally through a complete transformation of the mind, body and spirit! You truly have to change your life to overcome it. This means getting off processed foods and GMO’s. As a society, we often choose to take the easy way out. To me, chemotherapy seemed like taking the easy way out. I realized that surgery and chemo doesn’t really cure anything. You could cut off a tumor and have it grow back. What really needs to be addressed is the root cause of the problem: diet and lifestyle. The only cure for cancer is a lifelong dedication to clean eating and to health and wellness. My life is forever changed for the better as a result of cancer. My family has also benefited a great deal from my lifestyle change. We have planted a large organic garden that we use for food and juicing. I also have a strong desire to give back and help people. I thank God that I got cancer because it gave me the cosmic wake up call that I so desperately needed. I have transformed my life and now I’m in great shape and for the first time in my life I FEEL HEALTHY! More importantly, my wife and I have made our ongoing health and wellness a family affair and our first priority. One of the most rewarding things about my entire ordeal is witnessing the transformation in our children. They no longer crave or ask for junk food! They love gardening and living a healthy lifestyle, and that is possibly the greatest gift I could ever give them.”
Acid/alkaline balance
Alkaline and Acid Ash – pH refers to “potential of hydrogen” and is a measurement of whether your body is in an acidic, balanced or alkaline state. The pH scale runs from 1-14, with 7 being in the middle (or neutral). Anything lower than 7 would be within the acidic range, anything above 7 is within the alkaline range. The pH of the different bodily fluids will vary for many reasons. For example, your urine and vaginal fluid will measure slightly acidic because this helps to keep unfriendly bacteria from colonizing in these areas; the saliva normally measures slightly alkaline as this helps to prevent tooth decay; and the blood is slightly alkaline at 7.365- 7.4, with your bodies buffering systems working very hard to keep it within that tight range. Acidic foods will add hydrogen molecules to the body, therefore making your body more acidic, alkaline foods will remove hydrogen molecules from the body, thus making you more alkaline.
When you ingest foods and liquids, the end product after digestion and assimilation of nutrients will result in an acid or alkaline-forming effect. These end products are often referred to as an acid-ash or alkaline-ash. All foods and beverages can then be considered either alkaline or acidic based on the ash that is created following digestion.
Using the Acid/ Alkaline Food Chart- Most of the foods that people are eating today fall into the acid-forming category. One way to alter your pH score would be to stop your consumption of the standard American diet and start eating a diet rich in fresh organic fruits and vegetables, and by juicing a variety of raw leafy greens such as kale, chard, spinach, watercress, and wheatgrass, along with a variety of other vegetables, and by making nutritious smoothies with fruits and greens. In addition, you can drink plenty of spring water with fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice which will also leave behind an alkaline ash following digestion.
To maintain a healthy pH your goal is to eat 70 -80% alkaline foods. The chart below gives you an idea of where foods would land on the alkaline/acidic ash scale and gives you a numerical ranking. It should be noted that many of the foods listed as acidic forming are not appropriate to eat when following an anticancer diet. It is for informational purposes only.
How to test your pH
You can test your pH level using pH Testing Strips that are made for saliva or urine. These can be purchased from health food stores or online, and can be used to give you a measure of what is going on inside of your body. The proper strip to purchase is a narrow or short range strip, which will measure from 5.0 to 9.5 or so.
To test the saliva: The first test of the day is immediately upon waking before eating or drinking anything, otherwise you must wait at least two hours after eating or drinking to ensure that the food that you have consumed does not alter your test results. First cleanse the mouth by filling it with saliva and then swallowing or spitting it out. Fill the mouth again with saliva and spit it onto a spoon, then place the test strip into the saliva for 10-15 seconds. The strip will change colors based on the results. Use the insert from the package to determine your results. You can perform this test 4 times per day to get a clearer picture of what is going on inside of your body. You may find that your pH fluctuates throughout the day, this is normal. Your goal is to register slightly more alkaline than acidic, around 7.2 to 7.4 for saliva, as it is at this level that oxygen is plentiful. Please do not go overboard by over-alkalize your body either, this can be just as detrimental to health as being overly acidic. Reach the 7.2- 7.4 level and hold yourself there. Hydration
Your body needs a minimum of 50 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight per day in order to flush toxins out of the body and to stay hydrated. Consider purchasing a water filtration system that will remove the fluoride, chlorine, and other chemicals and metals that are found in municipal water supplies. A simple carbon filtration system will only remove chlorine so don’t assume that any filter will do the job well. You can find products online that will remove the harmful elements and leave the beneficial minerals intact, such as a Water Filtration System.
Recipes to make filtered water more alkaline:
Alkaline water #1 – take one gallon of water and add 1/2 tsp sea salt, the juice of 4 lemons or limes (and toss in the skins too), 1 tbsp of raw organic honey or a pinch of organic stevia (if needed), and drink this throughout the day. Sea salt contains 82 trace minerals which will enhance this water. Lemons and limes will create an alkaline ash following digestion.
Alkaline water #2- wash 3 organic lemons or limes and quarter them. Blend them up with the skins in 3 cups of filtered water. Strain/squeeze the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth and then store it in a mason jar in the fridge. To use, add 1/4 cup of this mixture into a glass of 8 oz filtered water. Drink this mixture 3 times per day. This will help with alkalinity and elimination of toxins.
Alkaline water #3- adding barley grass or wheat grass powder to your drinking water
