“I thought I was in “perfect health” before my diagnosis, but the truth is that my digestion was a mess. I had chronic constipation and gas issues, something was just not right. I ate the SAD diet (Standard American Diet) and my body was starving for nutrients! This is what I believe to be the main cause of my cancer. My body wasn’t eliminating correctly and I became toxic.” Cortney Campbell
Cortney Campbell heals from stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma with the Bill Henderson Budwig protocol, supplements, and detoxing protocols
It was in the fall of 2004 when Cortney Campbell found a lump in her neck. She had an MRI and was also given the option to have the lump biopsied, but since money was tight at the time, she opted to hold off on that procedure. Doctors prescribed antibiotics instead and the lump went away on its own.
In September of 2008, at the age of 26, she found a second lump in her right armpit that was the size of a small lemon and another in her neck. After having lab work, she was sent to the Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta for a consultation with a surgeon who subsequently scheduled a full lumpectomy/ biopsy for the very next day.
Two weeks later the results of the biopsy revealed that she had a slow-growing Lymphoma. Her oncologist scheduled her for a CT/PET scan along with a bone marrow biopsy which confirmed that is was a Stage II Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The recommended treatment was 3 months of chemotherapy followed by radiation. The possible side effects would include hair loss, nausea, mouth sores, and possible infertility.
While waiting for the scheduled course of chemotherapy to begin, her husband Kevin started researching alternative cancer treatments. The first source that he came upon was a man named Jerry Brunetti, who is the author of the book Cancer, Nutrition & Healing. Jerry had healed his own Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma using nutritional therapies. This led her to research the book Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle, Non-toxic Healing, by Bill Henderson.
The protocol recommended in Bill Henderson’s book details an updated version of a healing diet that was originally put forth by Dr Johanna Budwig, who was a German biochemist that healed many people of late stage cancers with the diet that she developed. The diet is known as the Budwig Protocol, and is a very strict vegetarian regime which has an emulsified flax seed oil and cottage cheese mixture at its core.
It was Dr Budwig’s belief that a lack of cellular oxygen is the main cause of cancer and that this lack of cellular oxygen came about because she believed that people are consuming toxic fats. Of particular concern to her was that we are not consuming enough omega 3 essential fatty acids in general, and the fats that they are consuming are processed in such a way (with chemicals and high heat) that it makes them toxic to the body. Budwig says that consuming toxic oils will interrupt the respiration cycle within our cells, essentially shutting them down.
The Bill Henderson Protocol uses the flax oil and cottage cheese mixture developed by Budwig along with the addition of several key nutrients that work to build up the immune system. Bill describes his version of the diet in chapter 5 of his book. Cortney made the decision to implement Bill Henderson’s version of the Budwig diet on November 4th instead of using the chemotherapy and radiation therapies that were recommended by her doctors. She then added a few extra therapies such as drinking Essiac tea, ionized water and wheatgrass juice, as well as rebounding in order to stimulate her lymphatic system.
Cortney took multiple supplements and did the following therapies:
- She followed the Budwig diet of cottage cheese/ flax oil mixture for breakfast every morning.
- She eliminated all sugar, meat, caffeine, processed foods, and all cooked foods.
- The rest of her diet consisted of mostly raw vegetables
- She juiced vegetables
- She juiced wheatgrass every morning
- She made green smoothies from leafy greens
- She sprouted lentils and mung beans
- She limited her intake of fruit to just 2 servings per day
- She took the following supplements according to the Bill Henderson version of the Budwig Protocol. You can read all about dosage information with this link:
- Heart Plus: Vitamin C with L-Lysine & L-Proline
- Green Tea Extract
- Green Supreme Barley Tablets
- Transfer Point Beta-1 3-D Glucan
- She drank Essiac Tea Herbs which she works to detoxify her lymphatic system
- Dr. Williams’ Daily Advantage Multi-Nutrient Supplement
- She drank Ionized Water
- She used a Rebounder, as jumping on a mini-trampoline which works to stimulate the lymphatic system.
- She monitored her progress by doing the HcG Urine Test

In December she visited the Living Foods Institute that is located in Atlanta GA, for a 12-day healing protocol and was introduced to many new ways to enjoy raw foods. She also received 7 colonics during her stay.
In May of 2009, Cortney found out that she was pregnant. She says that this was a difficult time for her, especially since her OBGYN refused to take her on as a patient saying that it was because she “had refused to treat her cancer.” Her parents, friends, and family were also very skeptical of her decision to heal the cancer naturally, and the pregnancy only made their skepticism even more difficult to handle. She says that she had to turn off all of the negative feedback, and that she concentrated on “positive and prayerful thinking.”
Throughout March she continued on with the Bill Henderson version of the Budwig protocol, but by April she was suffering from severe morning sickness and could no longer eat the mixture. Additionally, anything green seemed to induce vomiting, though she discovered that she was able to keep down almond butter, apples, and organic saltines. She says that. “It is ironic that shortly after I began surviving off of my three morning sickness staples, my oncologist gave us the shocking news that I was in remission! On May 4th, 2009 I was declared in “clinical” remission and I have had a clean bill of health ever since then.”
She says that the diet that she eats now is not as extreme as it was in the beginning of her natural treatments, but she still stays away from all sugar, processed foods, and conventional foods. She rarely eats meat, and if she does it is grass-fed, free-range meat or wild-caught fish. She eats mostly nutrient-dense, organic vegetables, a big, colorful salad, and drinks 64 ounces of vegetable smoothies everyday. She also drinks green tea and takes 26 supplements everyday, and says that she has rarely misses eating the cottage cheese/flax seed oil mixture.
