What is Protocel?
Protocel is said to interfere with the anaerobic respiration of cancerous cells. The scientific research behind this approach is based upon the work of German biochemist, Dr Otto Warburg, who was awarded the Nobel Prize back in 1931 for his discovery regarding oxygen-transferring enzymes that are involved in the respiration of cells.
Warburg was intensely interested in the physiology of cancerous cells and was the first scientific expert to prove that cancer cells do NOT use oxygen as their primary method of producing energy as normal cells do. Simply put, all normal healthy cells use oxygen to burn fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and sugars to produce energy in order to survive. Cancerous cells have lost this ability and must use a method of anaerobic (without oxygen) metabolic pathway instead. This process is called “glycolysis.” Glycolysis involves the fermentation of glucose in an environment that is devoid of oxygen. This fermentation process produces the same energy packets of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) that the aerobic process produces in healthy cells, but the fermentation process is much less efficient. This means that, although cancer cells are prolific at reproducing and spreading throughout the body, they can barely make enough energy to sustain themselves.
In regards to glycolysis, Dr. Joseph Mercola explains, “This inefficient pathway for energy metabolism yields only 2 moles of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy per mole of glucose, compared to 38 moles of ATP in the complete aerobic oxidation of glucose.” This characteristic makes them different from normal healthy cells that use oxygen as their primary method of producing energy. Because Protocel only targets the anaerobic pathway of cell respiration, this means that only the cancerous cells will be harmed with this therapy, not the healthy cells.
The history of protocel
James Sheridan was a chemist/ researcher at the Michigan Cancer Center. He theorized that if he was could chemically control the energy requirements of cancerous cells it may cause them to revert back into a state where the body could eventually recognize and eliminate them as foreign matter. Around 1950, Sheridan was invited to join the staff of the Detroit Institute of Cancer Research. It was there that he began developing Entelev, which is a product that had the ability to interfere with the energy-making process of cancerous cells.
Sheridan was put in charge of the chemical workups while other experts from the institute performed testing on lab animals. In 1953, the institute’s director concluded that they were ready to test their product in a clinical setting. They formed a committee consisting of the Dean of Medicine at Wayne University, three oncologists from local hospitals along with the institutes director. The committee spent several days interviewing the experts who were running the tests and reviewing the results. The director of the Detroit Institute of Cancer Research then informed the American Cancer Society about the product they had developed. A meeting was scheduled to take place in New York City between the Director and the Dean of Medicine, but upon returning, they reported that the American Cancer Society would not approve the clinical trials because Mr. Sheridan could not provide proof that he owned the rights to Entelev. Following this development, Mr Sheridan was fired from his position.
Sheridan’s continued to work on Entelev- Based on positive results from the animal testing, Sheridan knew that his product was non-toxic and began supplying it to some friends who were nearing the end-stages of life due to cancer. Having success with the treatments, word soon spread about Entelev. Sheridan began receiving requests for the product from all over the country, and unable to refuse them, he began distributing it for free to anyone who asked for it. The FDA got wind of what was happening and eventually placed an injunction against the distribution of the product. When Sheridan attempted to appeal the decision, the court claimed to have lost the original transcripts that must accompany any appeal application. Apparently this paperwork needed to be filed within 60 days of the original court decision and the transcript wasn’t located until after the 60 day deadline. As time progressed, Sheridan continued to try to have his product tested but he continually ran into road blocks. Eventually he gave up and retired.
Current Products on the market- In 1984, Medical Research Products obtained the original Entelev formula and started producing a product under the name of Cantron. In the spring of 2000, a Canadian company started working with the Sheridan family to produce their own version of the product that they named Protocel. Both manufacturers charge about the same price, and both products appear to have similar ingredients, although there is a slight difference in their quantities and Protcel has the addition of small quantities of trace minerals.
Ingredients of protocel
Tetrahydroxyquinone, rhodizonic acid, sodium, potassium, croconic acid, catechol (or pyrocatechol), triquinoyl, leuconic acid, inositol, and copper, and small amounts of trace minerals.
Contraindications:
Protocel is generally not recommended for lung cancer patients because of the concern regarding congestion in the lungs.
Other contraindications include combining with the following therapies:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Selenium
- thyroid support
- co q-10
- “sea greens” such as spirulina, algae, chlorella,
- Burdock Root
- chemotherapy
- electo-medicine devices
- Essiac tea and Flor-Essence (which is similar to Essiac with a couple of extra ingredients)
- DMSO
- Ozone treatments ( oxygen treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen are beneficial to the functioning of Protocel)
- Flax seed oil as used in the Budwig diet (also spelled flaxseed oil). It is starting to appear that flax seed oil may be compatible, but it remains on this list as a precaution
- IP6 (in theory there may be a problem, but case histories are needed)
- 714-x
- Hydrogen peroxide
- PMB Techno
- Creatine
- Cellect
- Ginseng
- Glutamine
- Taurine
- Rhodiola Rhosea
- D-Ribose
- Zeolite it is unknown if Zeolite will chelate the compounds that are found in Cantron or Protocel.
- Magnesium taken in higher doses, magnesium is credited with increasing ATP production.
- L-Carnitine
- Resveratrol
- Colloidal silver – the heavy metal quality of silver could cause a reaction with Protocel.
- Pau d’arco combined with Germanium-132 although taking either separately with Protocel is OK
- Grapefruit seed extract (due to its high vitamin C content)
- Whey protein should also be avoided because of the L-cysteine
- Iodine
- Enercel
- MSM
- Cesium Chloride
- Poly-MVA because of the alpha-lipoic acid
- Hormone-Blocking Drugs
- Immunocal
- MMS (Miracle Mineral Supplement) chlorine dioxide
- Sulfhydrazly antioxidants which includes: L-cysteine, N-acetylsteine, Alpha-lipoic acid, Glutathione
