“As time passed, I realized one of the basic laws of cancer: Wrong foods caused the malignancy to grow, while proper foods allowed natural body defenses to work and the malignancy was absorbed…” ~ Dr. William Donald Kelley
Lou Dina heals from Lymphoma of the bone and lymph nodes by following the healing protocol developed by Dr William Donald Kelley.
It was in 1978 when Lou Dina received his diagnosis of lymphoma, although he says his health ills began long before that. Lou grew up in the 1950’s eating the standard American diet which he said was high in dairy, fats, sugars, soft drinks, and junk food. He reports that he was prone to having frequent illnesses including strep throat, tonsillitis, colds, and the flu. To combat these repeated infections doctors removed his tonsils when he was a young boy.
When he was 11, Lou began to experience problems with his right elbow. He says that the area would become swollen and painful for a few weeks and then the pain would leave as mysteriously as it came. He says that the frequency, duration, and intensity of the pain increased to the point where he went to see an orthopedic surgeon. The X-rays indicated that a cyst was eating away at the bone, so a surgery was scheduled to scrape out the joint and then new bone was grafted from his right hip to repair the hole that was left by the cyst.
As a young man he began to have a similar swelling and soreness in his left wrist. At first, the problem occurred every 4 months and would last for a few weeks, but as time passed it became much worse. He reports that he had to wrap it in an ace bandage and could not move it without experiencing intense pain. He consulted a physician and was diagnosed with gout, but the “cure” prescribed by his doctor was not effective so he consulted a second physician who agreed with the first doctor.
Lou consulted with a third physician in 1978, and this doctor took one look at his severely distended wrist which was now the size of a tennis ball and insisted that he go immediately to the hospital. A biopsy confirmed he had a malignant form of lymphoma of the bone and the surrounding lymph nodes. Bone lymphoma is an uncommon malignancy that accounts for less than 5% of all bone tumors. By the time he was seen the bone of his wrist had been consumed by the cancer and was the consistency of soft mush. He was given a series of radiation treatments which reduced the mass but his wrist remained weak and sore. This was followed by one treatment of chemotherapy which caused him to have severe migraines accompanied by nausea and so he told his doctor that he could not continue on with the treatments.
It was around this time that he discovered the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapy and began reading about alternative treatments. He attended their annual convention in Detroit and was so amazed by the stories of healing cancer naturally that he promptly put all conventional treatments on hold to allow him time to investigate them further. He says that his background in engineering had trained him to investigate issues and then trace them back to their root causes, when he did that with his cancer he was able to see how his diet and lifestyle had played a role in the development of the disease.
His research led him to the work of William Donald Kelley, a dentist who cured himself of pancreatic cancer back in 1962 by eating a specialized diet that was based upon metabolic typing. His therapy also involved taking high doses of pancreatic enzymes, supplements that were based on the individual’s deficiencies, and utilizing detoxifying therapies such as coffee enemas. When Dina brought up the possibility of following this protocol to his oncologist he says that they entered into several hours of debate about the pluses and minuses of Kelley’s approach to cancer, but the conversation ended when his doctor confessed that his mother and sister had both died of cancer.
Under the guidance of Ruth Sackman, who was the founder of the Foundation for the Advancement of Cancer Therapy and Dr Kelley, Lou began following the metabolic program. After 6 months he decided to attend the John Richardson Clinic in Berkeley, California because it offered a similar program to Kelley’s.
Lou found these therapies to be very effective for his healing plan.
- He ate a diet of whole, natural foods, largely in their raw, organic state were used abundantly. His diet included unprocessed meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and unprocessed grains.
- He drank 1-2 quarts of freshly made juice daily, which was usually a combination of carrots, celery, beets and spinach. This was an important part of the program.
- Read more about juicing
- He eliminated all additives, preservatives, refined sugar, white flour, processed meats, processed foods, soft drinks and junk food.
- The body needs cleansing inside and out to assist in the elimination of waste products and toxins. Various methods were used including coffee enemas, flushes and purges.
- Read more about coffee enemas
- Read more about cleansing and flushing the digestive organs
- Supplements were added to help correct his specific deficiencies. He took liver supplements, bone supplements, and numerous others. These supplements must be tailored to the specific needs of each individual patient.
- He took large doses of pancreatic enzymes.

- A “take charge attitude” helps reduce stress and improve attitude. These factors are shown to make a significant difference in a patient’s ability to recuperate. Imagery, relaxation, and a positive outlook seem to assist the body in restoring normal functioning of the various glands and organs.
- Exercise as appropriate for the condition of the patient is important. The goal is to get oxygen and blood pumping to nourish cells and assist in elimination. Although it is not appropriate for very sick persons to wear themselves out.
- The assistance of a professional health practitioner well versed in biological alternatives is highly recommended.
- Be involved. Hippocrates said, “Physician, heal thyself.” It is your body and your life. Your feedback combined with an appropriate practitioner is a good combination.
- He says that that emotional problems and severe emotional trauma often play a significant role in causing cancer, and he believes this was true for him so he worked very hard to eliminate suppressed anger and resentment from his life.
Within a couple of months Lou’s tests revealed a decrease in cancer activity, and as time passed he was able to make a full recovery and could once again play the guitar. Over the years, Dina has become a strong advocate for FACT and has appeared at many of their conventions, and has even authored a book about his own healing experience. He writes this about the FACT organization. “Unlike the majority of cancer patients, I was extremely fortunate to discover the The Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapy back in 1978. I followed their well-researched, time-tested metabolic protocol, also referred to as bio-repair, using non-toxic, non-invasive, holistic methods and was soon on my way back to good health. I have never had a relapse, and have remained cancer-free since implementing the detailed regimen that I outlined in my book. I am but one of many people who have successfully followed this approach, without the trauma, immune damage and relapses often associated with traditional approaches (radiation, chemotherapy, hormone treatment or surgery). I have been actively involved with F.A.C.T. for over 30 years. Their website contains a wealth of resources for cancer patients, including an excellent book Rethinking Cancer: Non-Traditional Approaches to the Theories, Treatments and Preventions of Cancer and the DVD Rethinking Cancer, which also details my battle with cancer (along with many other stories), as well as the theory and fundamentals of bio-repair, and provides the exact steps I followed to rid myself of cancer and regain my health.”T

Foundation for the Advancement of Cancer Treatment (FACT) healing recommendations
The recommended diet– the rebuilding blocks begin with a raw, (preferably) meals of organic vegetables and fruits, such as carrots, beets and celery juices as well as vegetable soups and salads. High quality proteins are the body’s major cell-building materials and should be uncontaminated by chemical additives, hormones or antibiotics. The protein in the diet comes from nuts, sprouts, legumes and avocados, as well as animal proteins that comes from minimally processed, organic meats, fish, and poached or soft-boiled eggs. The diet also includes fermented foods like whole yogurt and raw cheeses, homemade nut cheese and sauerkraut. Grains are considered a rich source of vital, nutrients and are consumed in whole, unprocessed, uncooked forms. These include rye, brown rice, barley, millet and more. The recommended method for preparing the grains is with the “thermos cooking process” which keeps the enzymes intact. Spouts such as alfalfa and radishes are some of the finest sources of vitamins, minerals and enzymes (read more about sprouting), as is glucose in the form of raw, unprocessed honey and maple syrup. Certain supplements can also play a role in the rebuilding process.
Detoxification– All of us, without exception, are exposed to toxins from the day we are born. They are found in food additives, drugs, household chemicals, cosmetics, x-ray exposure, and a host of environmental pollutants. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 85% of cancers are environmentally produced, and the product of such exposures. To utilize biological therapies to reverse illness, it is imperative to assist the body in the removal of these toxins to restore the immune system, which is known to play an active role in preventing and fighting cancer. The FACT advocated protocol works to restore and strengthen function of the colon, kidney and liver, the prime organs of toxic elimination via the use of colonics, roughage and other detoxification procedures. The largest and most overlooked organ of elimination, the skin, is also cared for with body brushing and warm baths in Epsom salts. Also included are breathing techniques to optimize the function of the lungs and exercises for the lymphatic system, as well as fasting, such as found with water and juice fasting.
Psychological healing- There is no doubt that a patient’s psychological attitude plays a profound role in the recovery program. The FACT approach advocates a host of techniques to establish the psychological framework to support healing, including stress management, meditation, biofeedback along with counseling to optimize the patient-family/caregiver relationship
Physical -The goal is to strengthen host resistance. Attention must be paid to normalize, as much as possible, all of the systems of the body – endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, nerve, etc. – as well as to correct hormonal imbalances. The physical state of the body plays a great role in facilitating the healing process. Practitioners who are involved with biological therapies are aware that a misaligned spine can greatly impede bio-repair, as various organs and systems such as bowel movements, circulation and the endocrine system are signaled into activity by means of the nerve network. Physical exercise, breathing exercises, light therapy, and proper rest are also considerations in the implementation of an effective bio-repair protocol.
Therapies– Over the years, FACT has had considerable experience with cancer patients who have utilized a number of supplementary procedures and substances to help battle disease and restore and strengthen their immune system. These include Immunotherapy, Whole-Body Hyperthermia (Fever Therapy), Cellular and Stem Cell Therapy, and Botanicals such as Hoxsey Herbal Therapy, and Essiac Tea, which is an old herbal formula discovered by Canadian nurse Rene Caisse which includes four primary herbs (slippery elm inner bark, burdock root, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb root) that is said to aid in re-balancing the body chemistry and in the elimination of toxins.
